CD Projekt Red Hit With Ransomware

Aside from targeting hospitals and health centers in 2020, ransomware hackers have also decided to give game developers a run for their money – hitting Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red in the process.

Posted last Tuesday, CDPR admitted to the attack happening, with them being unable to identify who did it but had managed to backup their encrypted servers. “This attack looks to involve a type of ransomware called HelloKitty, as the style and naming convention of the note are consistent,” says Emsisoft threat analyst Brett Callow, adding that it’s impossible to say for sure without looking at the malware itself. “The group behind HelloKitty do not deploy it frequently and the most notable victim to date is Brazilian power company, CEMIG.”
