Overwatch: Why does Sigma, the new hero, go barefoot? Blizzard responds

“We decided to keep his feet barefoot to place more emphasis on the aspect of being in an insane asylum,” explains Blizzard; Do not rule out skins with shoes.

On 23 July, Sigma presented himself as “an eccentric astrophysicist who hopes to unlock the secrets of the universe without knowing that they have turned him into a living weapon”. Dragged down by his madness, Sigma is the new hero of Overwatch, and players were struck by the fact that he was barefoot despite wearing huge armor.

Blizzard artist Qiu Fang echoed fans’ questions and wanted to offer his vision in shaping Sigma’s design. On the one hand, they wanted to connect with the idea that he has been in a madhouse and, on the other, the fact that the character goes barefoot gives him more originality.

The explanation of Sigma’s bare feet

“Thank you for your comments,” Fang begins, “We decided to keep his feet bare to put more emphasis on the aspect of being in a madhouse; in many institutions, patients are not allowed to have shoes because they can get hurt with laces. While Sigma isn’t necessarily in danger of that, we feel that not having shoes helped establish that connection.

On the other hand, he adds: “I also tested it with my shoes on, and that made it much more generic, so in the end we decided to leave it with bare feet. However, that’s the internal reasoning, I’m sure we’ll make skins of him with shoes in the future!
